Know your filing deadline, limitation period and court fee for common legal proceedings across India — indicative, not legal advice.

Understand limitation in 5 points

1

Limitation is automatic (s.3)

A court must dismiss a time-barred suit even if the other side never raises the point — there is no mercy by silence.

2

Condonation saves appeals, not suits (s.5)

Delay can be condoned for appeals and applications, but for a suit a missed date is usually the end of the remedy.

3

Special laws beat the Schedule (s.29(2))

Where a special law (cheque bounce, arbitration, consumer, RTI) sets its own period, that governs — and some even cap condonation.

4

Court holidays extend the last day (s.4)

If the last day falls when the court is closed, filing on the day it reopens is still in time.

5

Writs have no fixed period

Constitutional writs aren't governed by a limitation article; courts apply the doctrine of delay and laches, so there is no countdown.

Indicative computation from public statutes. Not legal advice; limitation and court fee depend on the facts and the concerned court's determination. Verify with an advocate or the court Registry. Nyaaysaarthi is not affiliated with any Government body.
